Crochet Cactus Plant – Free Pattern

Stitches Used:

Chain stitch, Single crochet, Slip stitch, Single Crochet 2 Together

 

Yarn: 1 Skein each color

Green for Cactus – Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Color: Olive

Brown for dirt – Red Heart Super Saver Yarn, Solid – Color: Coffee

Pink or desired color for flowers – Craft Smart Yarn, Solid – Color: Fuchsia

Weight: 4 – Standard worsted yarn

Hook: US – I – 5.5 mm

 

Abbreviations

Ch – Chain

SC – Single Crochet

SC2TOG – Single Crochet 2 Together

Rd – Round

 

Large Spherical Cactus

Ch 16

Row 1: SC in second chain from hook (working in the back loop) and in each Stitch across (15 SC)

Row 2 – 30: Ch 1, turn, working in the back Stitch SC across (15 SC)

Fold the piece in half so that the foundation row lays over the top of the last row, working in the front loops of both rows Slip Stitch across to join sides together.

Cut yarn but leave enough to sew around the circumference of the top of the cactus with a yarn needle, tighten to close, tie off and weave in tails

With another piece of the same color yarn sew around the circumference of the other end, stuff with fiberfill before tightening, tie off ends but leave tails to sew cactus to dirt piece

 

Medium Spherical Cactus

Ch 12

Row 1: SC in second chain from hook (working in the back loop) and in each Stitch across (11 SC)

Row 2 – 20: Ch 1, turn, working in the back stitch SC across (11 SC)

Finish the same as the large cactus

Small Spherical Cactus

Ch 9

Row 1: SC in second chain from hook (working in the back loop) and in each Stitch across (8 SC)

Row 2 – 16: Ch 1, turn, working in the back Stitch SC across (8 SC)

Finish the same as the large cactus

 

Sphere for dirt

Rd 1: In a Magic Circle SC 6, join with a Slip Stitch, tighten tail (6 SC)

Rd 2: Ch 1, 2 SC in each SC (12 SC)

Rd 3: Ch 1, (*2 SC in first Stitch, 1 SC in the next), repeat around* (18 SC)

Rd 4: Ch 1, (*2 SC in first Stitch, SC in the next 2 Stitches), repeat around* (24 SC)

Rd 5: Ch 1, (*2 SC in first Stitch, SC in the next 3 Stitches), repeat around* (30 SC)

Rd 6: Ch 1, (*2 SC in first Stitch, SC in the next 4 Stitches), repeat around* (36 SC)

Rd 7: Ch 1, (*2 SC in first Stitch, SC in the next 5 Stitches), repeat around* (42 SC)

Rd 8: Ch 1, (*2 SC in first Stitch, SC in the next 6 Stitches), repeat around* (48 SC)

Rd 9 & 10:  Ch 1, 1 SC in First Stitch and in every Stitch around (48 SC)

Rd 11: Ch 1, (*SC2TOG in first 2 Stitches, SC in the next 6 Stitches), repeat around* (42 SC)

Rd 12: Ch 1, (*SC2TOG in first 2 Stitches, SC in the next 5 Stitches), repeat around* (36 SC)

Rd 13: Ch 1, (*SC2TOG in first 2 Stitches, SC in the next 4 Stitches), repeat around* (30 SC)

Rd 14: Ch 1, (*SC2TOG in first 2 Stitches, SC in the next 3 Stitches), repeat around* (24 SC)

Rd 15: Ch 1, (*SC2TOG in first 2 Stitches, SC in the next 2 Stitches), repeat around* (18 SC)

Rd 16: Ch 1, (*SC2TOG in first 2 Stitches, SC in the next Stitch), repeat around* (12 SC)

Rd 17: Ch 1, SC2TOG all the way around (6 SC)

 

Flowers

In a Magic Circle SC 6

1 HDC, 1 DC, 1 HDC in the first Stitch and each Stitch around to make 6 petals

Attach flowers to the top of each Cactus, then sew the small cactus to the top of the large cactus slightly off center like the picture, and then large cactus to the top of the dirt also off center. Take the medium cactus and sew that to the dirt piece close to the large cactus. Will fit in a standard 4” terracotta pot.
